Think it through in a Focus session

Write a draft about a few concepts, have it checked round by round against your own sources, and turn the result into evidence.

Step 1 of 6

Start a session

A Focus session is a draft you write about one to eight concepts, with a partner that reads your sources and checks your draft. Start one from the Focus button in a concept panel, a gap row, a slipping row, or the Focus page.

  • Learn: explain the concepts in your own words.
  • Research: work out what your sources say, and what you infer.
  • Write: draft a piece; the partner critiques but never writes a sentence for you.
A Focus session: the context column with the concepts and their quotes, the draft in the middle, the partner on the right.

Step 2 of 6

Set the question and write

Type the question you want to settle above the draft, then write. The draft is yours: the partner never edits it. The Context column shows your concepts with the quotes that taught them, and Cite inserts a passage from a source into the draft.

Lines starting with ?? are open questions; they are collected when you finish.

Step 3 of 6

Check my draft

Each check is a round. The partner reads the draft, the sentences you changed since the last round, and the passages from your sources closest to what you wrote, then names the one thing to fix. The verdict is shown on the round: Looks solid, Getting closer, Same gap or New gap.

  • The same gap twice earns a more direct hint; the ladder is computed from the verdicts, not left to the model.
  • "From your sources" under a reply lists the passages it used, each with a link into the reader.

Step 4 of 6

Ask a question

The question box is for asides: a direct answer, no grading, and it does not count as a round. Use it when you need a definition or a pointer before you edit again.

Step 5 of 6

Stuck?

Two rounds at the most direct help level with the same gap shows a Still stuck? strip: find a source on the first concept, or ask the partner directly. Nothing in the app is charged for a round that changed nothing: an unchanged draft is refused with a hint.

Step 6 of 6

Finish

Finish is a checklist: save the draft as a source (its sentences become evidence under your concepts and a genuinely new idea becomes its own node), suggested open questions, links between the concepts, and cards. Nothing is written into the graph until you accept a suggestion.

  • The wrap-up strip shows the new source, its extraction progress and which concepts picked up evidence.
  • Export the session as markdown, with or without the conversation.

That is the loop: read, mark, write, check, remember.

That is it
